Process
Sourcing Materials
Word & Wood makes an effort to source materials from local lumber mills committed to sustainable practices.
Ohio is rich with a wide range of hardwoods including Ash, Cherry, Elm, Maple, Oak, and Walnut. Older trees are often felled to provide space for younger trees to grow in their place. It may be necessary to thin overgrown forests to promote the maturation of diverse tree species that grow in the place of those harvested. In other cases, trees are taken down during storm events or succumb to various forms of tree disease and homeowners, businesses, and parks officials pay for their removal. You are encouraged to ask questions about where your wood comes from.
Small Shop Spirit
Word & Wood currently operates out of a small one car garage space.
Although the one-man-shop is small, it provides a space to dream big.
Like the wood itself, the small shop size rewards creative thinking, encourages efficiency, and promotes the optimization of available tools and materials. The purchase of projects produced in the shop constitutes an investment in a local craft culture that aspires to continue growing.
Design and Customization
Word & Wood offers ready-made pieces and customized client collaborations.
From cutting boards and picture frames to coffee tables and desks, the pieces produced are designed to fit your needs and serve as functional art that lasts. In opposition to the "fast fashion" of pre-fabricated particle board furniture, the values of originality, quality, and integrity guide each design decision. If you have an idea for something you want designed, or see something readymade in the gallery that you would like sized to accommodate your needs, reach out and together we can collaborate to make something that is customized for you.
Craft Production
Word & Wood takes on one client project at a time.
In addition to ready-made pieces available in the gallery, you can reach out to request customized projects. Depending on the scope and size of the project, build times may range from as short as one week to as long as a month. All custom order projects require a deposit that covers the cost of materials and a percentage of time required for completion. Clients are encouraged to contribute their input at each step of the process. Throughout the building process, you will receive photograph updates and a detailed overview of time dedicated to each task.
Final Finish
Word & Wood prefers to use natural finishes to amplify the figure and features.
There are a wide range of finishes available to woodworkers; from classics including shellac, varnish, and polyurethane to more contemporary products like epoxy, oils, and waxes. Each has various strengths, reasons to prefer, and associated advantages. When discussing a custom project, we'll talk through these together. When considering a readymade piece, you'll find all the details provided.
Delivery
Word & Wood is happy to offer personal delivery within 25 miles of the shop.
The opportunity to meet clients, shake hands, and share stories is welcomed. If you live outside of this distance, you're encouraged to take a trip to Columbus, Ohio or reach out to discuss available shipping options. For some projects, the cost of shipping and the protections afforded by transport companies are not reasonable. However, there may be an opportunity for extended personal delivery, reach out and we can discuss options.
Customer Care
Word & Wood provides care instructions for each piece.
Each piece comes with a brief overview of care instructions. Instructions vary depending on the type of wood used and finish applied. If a natural finish is applied, customers may receive a small tin of finish that can be used to condition and preserve the piece. If an oil, wax, or epoxy finish is applied, customers will receive a list of recommended cleaning products they can use to ensure its longevity.
